Statements to NBC Los Angeles regarding April 21, 2009 report about US and Canada investigation of pet products:
Central Life Sciences (Maker of Bio Spot)
Central Life Sciences takes all concerns and claims associated with our products very seriously. We review each suspected adverse reaction case thoroughly, and work closely with pet owners, veterinarians, ASPCA’s Animal Product Safety Service and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to address concerns.
Central Life Sciences will work closely with the EPA to review suspected adverse incidents related to the use of our topical products. We agree with the EPA that the sharp increase in numbers of incidents being reported are subject to revision with the inclusion of new information, do not reflect the severity of the incidents, and do not reflect potential misuse of the product. As our incidents of suspected adverse reactions are thoroughly examined, we are confident that by reviewing this information with the EPA that our topicals will be shown to exhibit a wide margin of safety and are effective in protecting the health of companion animals.
Pet owners choose topical products more than any other flea and tick product form due to its convenience of application and effectiveness at stopping flea and tick infestations. With the use of these products, millions of cats and dogs are spared from the suffering caused by fleas and ticks which can lead to skin allergy dermatitis, internal parasites, severe anemia and even death. As with any pesticide, it is important that pet owners follow the recommended application guidelines according to label instructions to ensure the health and safety of their pet.
At Central Life Sciences, we understand pet owners’ concerns about the safety and efficacy of the products used on their family animals. We take our responsibility to the health and safety of pets very seriously and are committed to maintaining the trust of our customers.
Sergeant's
As the EPA continues to update its list of scrutinized flea and tick control products, it’s clear this is an industry-wide issue that affects both over-the-counter products and products sold through veterinarians as well. Sergeant’s works with the EPA on a continuous basis and welcomes the EPA’s increased evaluation of the use of spot-on pesticides to better protect pets. The health and safety of pets is Sergeant’s number one priority. We take our responsibility to make products that consumers can trust very seriously. We engage in extensive testing before any product hits the market and are always evaluating and looking for ways to improve our products. In fact, we recently improved versions of several squeeze-ons, including Sergeant’s Gold Squeeze-On for Dogs and Sentry Pro XFC by adding ingredients to protect sensitive skin. We are pleased to see the EPA reminding consumers to always carefully read and follow label instructions to minimize incidents caused by product misuse.
